Thoughts of the Mediterranean bring postcard-worthy images of beautiful blue ocean waters, white sane beaches, clear blue skies…and food? Yes, food! Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries shares nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is talked up around the world of nutrition for its many health advantages as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are healthy for all of us in our Manchester chiropractic family!
BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the growing recognition that diet plays a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being developed. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines endorsed a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein adequate enough to maintain normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been said to reduce hip fracture risk. Another new paper states that there is evidence that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also lower hip fracture risk as well as risk of lumbar spine osteoporosis in women. (2) A study just released this past month showed that older adults who adhered the Meditterranean Diet closely had reduced chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, lower osteoporosis odds, lower risk of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Manchester Chiropractic & Sports Injuries finds these new studies interesting enough to share with our Manchester chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
Good stuff! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests staying away from sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
