BENEFITS OF MELONS

Every part of a melon - peels, seeds, and bioactive compounds – offered health benefits in a new study. One certain melon from Honduras – the Galia variety – piqued researchers’ attention for its antioxidative, anticholesterol, antidiabetic, antibiotic (against pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, viruses), properties and thyroid function stimulation. (1) Agricultural researchers utilized gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis to review the phytocompounds of Honeydew melon (Cucumis melo L.) extracts. They found 37 compounds in whole fruit and 14 in seed extract. (2) Growing healthy melons contributes to healthy humans!

A NEW MELON COMBINES BEST OF TWO MELONS

Something most of us don’t think about is that cantalopes (“netted muskmelons”) are said to be susceptible to surface contamination. What did researchers do in an attempt to tamp down this issue? They crossed them with honeydew (“non-netted muskmelons”) to create an orange-fleshed honeydew melon fruit! This new fruit “Cucumis melo L.” is described as rich sources of quite a few human-healthy nutrients. The researchers studied and explained extensively just where the nutrients are in several parts of the fruit tissues! (3) Interesting what gets a person excited, isn’t it?

FUTURE OF MELONS’ NUTRITION

Another curious side note discovered in collecting research about the nutritional value of melons is about growing melons (specifically the “carosello leccese” version of Curcumis melo L.) in a soilless, greenhouse environment with LEDs as supplementary light. This process didn’t adversely affect the nutritional value. The bioactive compounds for human health were still present including methyl gallate (antioxidative and antiviral), α-tocopherol, and β-carotene. (4) Interesting what today’s investigators are attempting as global population expands to 9.9 billion by 2050 to keep us fed and healthy!
